   traveler
   Born either in Paris or Copenhagen, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was ennobled by king louis XIV in 1669 and was given the barony of Aubonne (canton of Vaud) in 1676. His first travels brought him to England, the Low Countries, and central Europe (Hungary and Poland). Following this, he visited Turkey, Palestine, Persia, the Indies, Sumatra, and Java. Brought to ruin by his nephew, he was constrained, as a Protestant, to go into exile after the revocation of the edict of nantes (1685). Named director of a new commercial company by the elector of Brandenburg, he died while traveling through Russia en route to Asia. His account, Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (Paris, 1681), is a descriptive and valuable document of the period.
